The presentation, given by Brendan Hewson, deals with the history of this violent phenomenon. Violence for control, violence utilized to inflict one man’s supremacy over his neighbour, one belief or dogma over another.
Today, the term terrorism is very evocative; sadly, these acts are not new. You will be taken on an interesting journey through history, commencing with the Roman invasion of Jerusalem in 63BC and culminating with the terrorist actions of the present day. The origins of terms that have entered the everyday English lexicon are explained.
Traditional causes are discussed together with key elements and inventions that transformed terrorism and guerrilla warfare. International initiatives and preventative processes are examined as are recent incidents around the world.
Terrorism is malevolent, malicious and cruel to those who are its victims. The architects and those responsible for the outrages have a different view. The logical political solutions are reasoned.
Is the conclusion perhaps, that history really does repeat itself and the term often misused?
If the purpose of terrorism is revolution then the remarks of President John F. Kennedy should be remembered.
